Government grant for purchasing electric vehicles
In short:
- You could get a government grant of up to £2,500 off the purchase price of a new electric vehicle under £35,000.
- A full list of eligible vehicles is available on the government's website.
- You could also be eligible for a grant of up to £350 towards the cost of buying and installing a home charger through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)
Update: On the 18th March 2021, the government made changes to the grant available for electric car purchases effective immediately. The maximum amount of grant available is now £2,500, and only for cars priced under £35,000. The Department for Transport says these changes reflect increases in the number of electric vehicles under £35,000 available on the market since 2019. The DfT also stated that reducing the maximum grant from £3,000 to £2,500 will mean that the funding will last longer and be available to more drivers.
What is the Plug-in car grant?
The plug-in car grant launched in 2018 by the UK government and continues to provide a subsidiary towards the purchase of new electric vehicles under £35,000 in value. The scheme aims to encourage more drivers to make the switch to electric, helping towards achieving the UK's target for cutting CO2 emissions. Recently, the grant was cut from £3,000 to £2,500 and restricted to vehicles worth under £35,000 to focus on helping those who need it most and stretch the funding to last longer and be available to more drivers
